Loans to Allard Pierson
13 novembre 2025
The Amsterdam Museum of Archaeology, the Allard Pierson, is organizing an exhibition about the daily lives of slaves in Suriname, highlighting their own, partly African, traditions. We are adding a lesser-known aspect: smoking habits on the plantations. It is unique that we have several handmade pipes made by slaves in Suriname, exactly as they were used in West Africa. We also have a rare, very comparable example from Ivory Coast. These loans will be on display at the Allard Pierson from November 21st until the end of May 2026.

The 2025 edition of Museum Night Amsterdam was slightly less busy than previous years, but that gave our volunteers more time to talk to visitors. In addition to our regular team, we received help from the organization, which has been calling for volunteers for a year now. These young volunteers prove to be much more motivated than those sent by socially responsible companies like Booking.com. This year, there were even some natural talents among them, who were able to tell an accurate story about our museum in no time. Applause for this year's volunteers!
PermalinkAnnual Museum Night
1 novembre 2025
A nice tradition is Museum Night Amsterdam, which takes place this year on Saturday, November 1st. The museum will be open from 7 p.m. to 2 a.m., while we also welcome visitors during the day. That evening, visitors will get a preview of our "Surinamese Pipes" exhibition, so around 500 people will see it on the first day. It's going to be a long day for the staff and volunteers, but everyone is looking forward to it. After all, previous editions were always enjoyable evenings with a new and young audience. The festive façade lighting certainly contributes.
